The Mars Bar™ sandwich (pronunciation: whit the fakk)

submitted 2nd March 2007

Not your traditional filling for a sandwich but was the Mars Bar™ sandwich a work of genius or insanity?

Now regarded as a Grades “urban legend”, the infamous Mars Bar™ sandwich is, nevertheless, now a part of Grades cricket history and although not seen for many years, may not be entirely gone for good.

The sandwich itself is fairly self-explanatory. Sliced up Mars Bar™ substituting for meat or paste as the filling. The bread was invariably white. As to a reason for it’s creation, one suggestion is that it was the invention of a supporter of “The Method”, the idea being that such a high-energy food would enhance a player’s performance.

The first accredited sightings of the Mars Bar™ sandwich occurred during the 1979 season and the accepted originator is believed to be a regular in the Anchorians side. Anchorians were, at that time, an eccentric collection of characters, so there were plenty of possible suspects.

It has reportedly reappeared, from time to time, although such sightings are unsubstantiated. One was apparently available at an Ellon Gordon tea break but this sighting is regarded by experts as a hoax as there are precious few sandwiches at Ellon Gordon teas and such an unusual one would be the source of much hubbub.
